Your Daily Foot Care Routine: A Step-by-Step Guide

Healthy feet are essential for overall well-being, as proper foot hygiene can help prevent infections, odor, pain, injury, and disease. From spotting a melanoma to staving off athlete’s foot, caring for your feet is the best way to keep the doctor away.

Here’s a list of tips on how to care for your feet in the order of a regular day, courtesy of Knight Foot & Ankle.

Shower

  • Wash your feet daily: Some studies have reported that about half of Americans don’t wash their feet in the shower. But you should, according to the CDC: with warm, soapy water, paying attention to the spaces between your toes. We also recommend using a mild soap and gently scrubbing to remove dirt and bacteria.

  • Dry thoroughly: After washing, dry your feet completely, especially between your toes. Moisture can promote the growth of fungi, which defeats the purpose of the shower.

  • Exfoliate your feet: With a pumice stone or washcloth, but don’t go too hard, as this can lead to dry feet. And if you’re thinking of getting a pedicure, the CDC recommends only visiting board-certified salons.

Get Dressed

  • Inspect your feet: Check for any signs of redness, swelling, blisters, or cuts. Pay attention to areas that may be prone to calluses or corns, and see a podiatrist if you have any concerns about your foot health.

  • Trim your toenails straight across: Avoid cutting them too short or rounding the corners, as this can increase the risk of ingrown toenails.

  • Moisturize: Apply moisturizer to your feet, focusing on the heels and dry areas. Avoid applying moisturizer between your toes, as moisture can promote fungal growth.

Walk Out

  • Check your shoes: Ensure your shoes fit properly and are not too tight or too loose. Inspect the inside of your shoes for any signs of wear or damage.

  • Sock Hygiene: Wear clean socks every day to prevent the buildup of bacteria and moisture. However, wear socks made from breathable materials like cotton or wool, and avoid synthetic fabrics that can trap moisture.
